Hospital Partition Systems
Retractable, non-porous medical partitions that divide any clinical space in seconds. Portable and wall-mounted systems engineered for infection control, patient privacy, and surge flexibility. Made in the USA.
Get a QuoteWhat Is a Hospital Partition System?
A partition has to do more than block a sightline in a hospital. It has to survive disinfection, deploy fast enough for emergency care, and hold up to daily use across departments.
A hospital partition system is a movable or wall-mounted barrier that divides clinical space into private patient zones without permanent construction. Unlike a fixed wall, it deploys when privacy is needed and retracts or stores when the space returns to shared use.
Rolascreen partition systems use a single continuous panel of non-porous, thermally-stabilized polyester film that extends from a compact base to a span of 10'. There are no hinge joints, no fabric, and no ceiling tracks. The same panel is wiped clean between patients with the disinfectants your facility already uses, which is why the system fits into terminal cleaning rather than sitting outside it. For the full material and cleaning rationale, see infection control partitions.
Two models share this platform. The Portable Elite rolls on a weighted, nesting wheelbase and moves wherever privacy is needed. The Wall-Mounted Elite anchors to the wall of a fixed bay, extends when a patient arrives, and retracts flush when the bay is empty. Both use the same panel, the same disinfectant compatibility, and the same in-house custom printing.
Two Partition Systems, One Clinical Platform
Choose portable for departments that reconfigure daily, wall-mounted for bays with a fixed footprint. Many facilities deploy both.
Portable Rolascreen Elite
For emergency departments, infusion centers, surge areas, and any space where the partition moves with the patient load.
- Weighted, locking, nesting wheelbase
- Extends to 10', available in 6'3" and 5'3" heights
- Approximately 65 lbs, moved and locked by one person
- Nests compactly for closet storage between deployments
Wall-Mounted Rolascreen Elite
For patient bays, exam rooms, and recovery areas with a defined footprint where the partition stays in place.
- Anchors to the wall, no ceiling tracks or overhead hardware
- Extends to 10', retracts flush to 18"
- Keeps ceilings clear for hoists, monitors, and lighting
- Same panel, same disinfectant compatibility as the portable unit
How Hospital Partition Options Compare
The three barrier types most facilities evaluate, on the attributes that matter to infection prevention, EVS, and nursing.
| Attribute | Rolascreen Retractable | Fabric Curtain | Folding Accordion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Continuous roll-out panel | Track-hung fabric | Hinged multi-panel fold |
| Panel surface | Seamless non-porous film | Absorbent fabric | Varies by material, joints between panels |
| Deployment | Under 30 seconds, one person | Fixed to track location | Unfold and position each panel |
| Ceiling tracks required | No | Yes | No |
| Wipe-in-place disinfection | Yes, between every patient | No, removal and laundering | Surface yes, hinge joints difficult |
| Bleach compatibility | Up to 10,000 ppm | Degrades fabric | Depends on panel material |
| Continuous span | 10' uninterrupted | Length of track | Interrupted at each hinge |
| Storage footprint | Nested (portable) or 18" flush (wall) | Stays on track | Full panel-stack width |
| Surge redeployment | Roll to hallways, overflow, triage | Not movable | Movable, bulkier |
| Custom printing | Full panel, both sides | Limited fabric prints | Panel face only |

Where Hospital Partition Systems Are Deployed
The same system serves every department that needs private, cleanable space on demand.
Emergency Department
Bay division, hallway overflow, and surge triage. Portable units create treatment space where curtains and tracks do not exist.
ICU and Step-Down
Bedside privacy for procedures and family conferences without adding ceiling hardware around monitors and lifts.
PACU and Pre-Op
Recovery bay separation that wipes clean between cases and retracts when the bay is empty.
Infusion and Dialysis
Chair-to-chair privacy across long treatment sessions, disinfected between every patient turnover.
Isolation and Cohorting
Rapid isolation zones and cohort areas when census exceeds room capacity, then redeployed when volume normalizes.
Clinics and Outpatient
Exam room flexibility, screening stations, and vaccination clinics without dedicating permanent square footage.
Built for Terminal Cleaning, Not Around It
Most partitions are excluded from terminal cleaning because they cannot be wiped in place. Rolascreen panels are cleaned in the same EVS pass as bedrails, IV poles, and overbed tables. The non-porous film is compatible with sodium hypochlorite to 10,000 ppm, quaternary ammonium compounds, accelerated hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol wipes.
There is no laundering cycle, no hinge joint to trap fluids, and no fabric to absorb them. The partition becomes a hard surface in the room turnover protocol. Read how facilities structure that workflow in terminal cleaning and hospital room turnover.

Hospital Partition Systems: Common Questions
Mostly terminology. "Partition" describes the job of dividing a space into zones, while "privacy screen" describes shielding a patient from view. A Rolascreen does both: it divides a bay or hallway into private patient areas and shields each one with a solid, opaque panel. Facilities teams tend to say partition, nursing and infection prevention tend to say privacy screen. See the product hub at medical privacy screen.
No. Portable Rolascreen units roll on a weighted wheelbase and need no installation at all. Wall-Mounted units anchor to the wall with no ceiling work, which keeps the ceiling clear for patient lifts, monitors, lighting, and ventilation. Neither option requires the track infrastructure that traditional cubicle curtains depend on.
Yes. The non-porous polyester film panel is compatible with sodium hypochlorite at concentrations up to 10,000 ppm, well above the sporicidal threshold used for C. difficile protocols. It is also compatible with quaternary ammonium compounds such as CaviCide, accelerated hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol-based wipes. The material does not degrade with repeated chemical exposure.
Very little. Portable units nest together, so several fit in the closet space a single folding screen would occupy. Wall-Mounted units retract flush to an 18" profile against the wall. This storage density is what makes it practical to keep partitions on hand for surge events without dedicating permanent floor space.
Yes, and this is one of the strongest use cases. When census exceeds bay capacity, portable partitions create treatment and triage space in hallways, waiting areas, and converted rooms, then return to standard positions when volume normalizes. See isolation room and surge capacity partitions for deployment patterns.
Yes. Logos, calming nature imagery, wayfinding color-coding, and department identification are printed in-house on the same non-porous film used for standard panels, at no extra cost when graphics are supplied ready. The printed surface survives the same disinfection cycle as an unprinted panel. See add your brand.
Yes. Every Rolascreen Elite, portable and wall-mounted, is manufactured in Los Angeles, California, and is Buy American Act compliant for federal and state procurement. Rolascreen is the only manufacturer of retractable medical privacy partitions in the United States. See hospital privacy screen manufacturer.
